Underwater Treasures
Oil on canvas
58 x 58 in

This painting represents the mysterious treasures hidden beneath the vast ocean surface; beautiful underwater flora and fauna, exotic marine creatures or even artefacts from sunken trading ships. The projection of the artist feelings on the painted motifs goes beyond mere visual description. The circled mosaic-like technique narrates the universality of underwater theme with colourful coral-like patterns at the bottom painted with tonal and analogues degrees of blue and complementary colour palette.

The tedious act of creating the circles represents the hardship of preserving our underwater treasures and adds to preciousness of the painting itself. The circular motion gives the painting a feeling of movement of the subjects and the tonal degree gives dynamism to the composition. The colour scheme moves between poles of light and dark of tones of blue. The colours become lighter towards the top right-hand side as the sunlight penetrates the water and in the left-hand side, the colours become darker as one enters the depth of the ocean. As for the texture, the top right-hand corner is sharper and crispy and progressively becomes more subtle towards the left-hand side. The coral-like elements painted with various colour chords sparkle like gemstones.

A strong bronze-coloured plant is the centre of attraction of the composition complemented by the striking orange flowers on the right side. They are the culmination of the structural movement of the painting forming a wave shape through rotation around a central axis. This painting was composed from the fine light blue background, the superimposed layer of mosaic-like circles each individually painted and the curvilinear flowers and stalks which were painted last.
