Automne Chinois Series III Acrylic on canvas 24 x 35 in
This
painting is influenced tradition of Chinese culture. The spatial
dimension of the negative space is almost occupied by the positive space
of the flowers and stalks. The painting plays with two different
textures; bold textures for the background and defined spherical forms
for the flowers. The effect of the background created with agitated,
spontaneous, short and broken knife strokes gives life to the painting
announcing the presence of the artist. The texture is irregular, uneven,
and intense with mysterious vibrations of tones; and your eyes are
attracted by the magnetic radiance of the tones. The bold and
pre-eminent background occupying the negative space is pushed towards
the back bringing forward the blossoms. The rich, juicy appearance of
the flowers stands out from the surface catching the light and the
transparency of some was due the effect of muted light reflecting on the
opaque ground colour producing a soft, radiant effect. The diagonal and
angular shapes of the stalks contrasting with the tenderness of the
flowers give a sense of dynamism. The series gives the feeling of
excitement; the same feeling you have during the New Year and mid-autumn
festivals. A deep and mysterious spiritual tension governs the
relationship between the flowers, the colour and the surrounding
background space. Series III involves careful grading of colours
according to the density of the atmosphere.
